--Dr. Averitt holds doctorate degrees from Vanderbilt University and from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

--He completed internships at the VA Hospitals in Memphis and Nashville.

--He has been in full-time private practice in Cookeville since 1981 and now serves and a psychological hospitalist.


--He served as the clinical director of the Laurel Center (a dual diagnosis, in-patient psychiatric hospital) from 1988 to 1994 and now serves on the consulting staff of Ten Broeck Psychiatric Hospital in Cookeville

--He served as the therapist for a physician's therapy group in Cookeville since 1991.

--He served as an adjunct professor at The University of Tennessee and at Tennessee Tech University in the past.

--He served as the Clinical Director for The Personal Growth and Learning Center from 1994 to 2000, an outpatient psychiatric and substance abuse treatment program.  He now serves on the consulting staff of Ten Broeck Psychiatric Hospital in Cookeville, Tennessee

He serves on the Advisory Board of the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network--Selected by the Tennessee Governor.  





--He served as an evaluator/advisor for the Tennessee Methamphetamine Pilot Treatment Project--Metro Nashville Residential Drug Court from 2005-2009.

--He served on the Governor's Methamphetamine Task Force.

--He is certified by the Board of Governors of the American Psychological Association College of Professional Psychology in the Treatment of Alcohol and Other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders, Certificate Number--AD001051 from 1996 to date.

--He completed a documentary entitled "In Memory of Robert Domingos and Linda Edwards: A Couple Murdered on June 4, 1963, A film by John B. Averitt, Ph.D.” A 46 minute film documentary, Copyright, 2011 which can be seen on You Tube.

He was featured on the History Channel program In Search of the Zodiac Killer in November and December of 2017.
